The starting point of our disaster recovery planning is to identify the risks that threaten your IT system, such as fire, flood, hacker attacks, hardware or power failure. The likelihood of these events occurring is then assessed along with the impact that the event would have on your IT system and subsequently your business. The risks are ranked and graded as presenting a high, medium or low risk to your business.
Options are then explored to either reduce or mitigate the risks that have been identified. This might be through installing additional redundant server components to reduce the risk of a total server failure or installing and configuring an uninterruptable power supply to eliminate the risks of mains power failure. Measures to diminish the risks might also take the form of contingency plans. For instance, it might be decided to hold configured, spare servers off site ready for deployment at short notice in the event of the main live servers being destroyed by fire.
The ranked risks and proposals to reduce them are presented to your decision makers to allow them to make an informed decision on the measures that you need to implement.
